Hurricanes Hand Out Annual Track And Field Awards

Coral Gables, FL (www.hurricanesports.com) – Junior Gus Martin (Miami Northwestern) was named the Most Outstanding Men’s Track Athlete, while All-Americans Kareen Clarke (Lithonic, GA) and Natalie Watson (Coral Springs) were named the women’s Co-Most Outstanding Track Athletes at the annual University of Miami Track and Field banquet at Monty’s in Coconut Grove.
Martin recorded the Hurricane’s top marks during the indoor season in the 55-meter hurdles, 60-meter hurdles and 200-meters while posting the team’s fastest times in 200-meters and 110-meter hurdles during the outdoor season.
At the recently concluded BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Martin scored in three events finishing fourth in the 200-meters, third in the 110-meter hurdles and ran the opening leg of the BIG EAST Champion 4×100-meter relay.
Clarke, who was named Most Improved Athlete following last season, won the BIG EAST triple jump titles at both the indoor and outdoor Conference Championships. She earned All-America honors for the second consecutive season with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. She ranks fourth in the nation in the triple jump this outdoor season.
Watson also earned All-America honors this season with a fourth-place finish in the 800-meters at the NCAA Indoor Track Championships. Watson, who currently holds three individual school-records and is a member of five school-record setting relays, won the BIG EAST 800-meter title at this past weekend’s outdoor conference championships in Piscataway, NJ. Watson currently ranks 10th in the nation in 800-meters.
Freshmen Kitoya Carter (Miami Northwestern) and Jennifer Penrose (Mesa, AZ) were named the women’s Co-Most Outstanding Newcomers while sophomore Dan Boniface was honored as the men’s Most Outstanding Newcomer. Freshman Dore Madere (Dallas, TX) was named the women’s track Most Improved Athlete while senior Shane Brown (St. Andrews, Jamaica) took home the honor on the men’s side..
Other award recipients included Jeff Gaulrapp (Baldwinsville, NY) and Shannon Sarabyn (Centreville, VA) as Most Valuable Cross Country runners. Junior sprinter Daryl Jones (Dallas, TX) was named the men’s track Unsung Hero for the second consecutive season and the Dr. Matt Karlafris Award given annually to the team’s top walk-on went to Aaron Bass (Hillsborg, OR).
