Baseball Drops 3-2 Decision To Jacksonville

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – Jacksonville scored three runs in the fifth inning and that is all it needed as the Dolphins (31-18) held off Miami, 3-2, in front of 1,692 fans Friday night at Mark Light Stadium.
The Dolphins held the Hurricanes (36-12) to a season-low three hits with 11 strikeouts. After JU starter Josh Daws left with a sore elbow 4.2 innings into the game, Jason Ryals (5-1) and Casey Shumaker held JU’s lead the remaining 4.1 innings with twi hits, one unearned run, three walks and eight strikeouts. Twice UM had bases loaded in the later innings, scoring just once in the sixth.
UM starter Kiki Bengochea (6-4) left the game during the seventh going 6.2 innings with five hits, three runs (all earned), four walks and four strikeouts. Daws allowed one hit, one earned run, one walk, one wild pitch, one hit batter and three strikeouts. Ryals, in 0.1 inning, allowed a hit, a run, a walk and a strikeout. Shumaker earned his 10th save going 4.0 innings with one hit, two walks and seven strikeouts.
Marcus Nettles recorded two of UM’s hits with both of the runs that scored. Kevin Howard had the lone other Hurricane hit. JU’s B.J. Weed and Dale Johnson each had a pair of hits, while Chad Oliva and Jami Rogders each had one hit. Johnson recorded two RBI.
The Hurricanes opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Marcus Nettles scored from third on a Daws wild pitch. Nettles led off the frame with a bunt single and eventually moved to third on consecutive grounds out from Javy Rodriguez and Kevin Howard.
The Dolphins took the lead, 3-1, in the fifth with three runs on two hits, two walks and an error. With one out, Billy Kickham walked. Chad Hauseman then hit into a fielder’s choice and took second on a throwing error from the shortstop. Chris Reier followed with a walk to put runners at first and second. B.J. Weed knocked in the first run, Hauseman, with a single to right field and took second on the throw to home. Dale Johnson then hit a double deep to left field to score Reier and Weed.
UM narrowed the Jacksonville lead, 3-2, in the sixth when Mike Rodriguez hit into a fielder’s choice allowing Nettles to score from third. Nettles led off the inning with an infield single. He moved to second when the left fielder recorded a fielding error on Javy Rodriguez’ at bat. The bases were then loaded with a walk to Kevin Howard.
