UM Crews Dominate Home Regatta

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami men’s and women’s crews highlighted its home regatta with wins in four varsity races, including both varsity eights, on the Hurricanes home course on Indian Creek in Miami Beach Saturday morning.

The varsity women, racing in the newly christened “Liz Dee” eight, defeated UCF and Connecticut with a time of 6:46.38 in flat and sunny conditions on the 2,000-meter course. The Golden Knights finished a distant 17 seconds behind the Hurricanes for second place with a time of 7:03.80, with UConn in third (7:17.88). The women’s eight featured Jenny Krawec, Monika Manios, Jacqui Julien, Dorien Ten Have, Mandy Turner, Bridget Gallagher, Yianna Reizakis, Marijka VanderPol and coxswain Jenny Lee.

The women’s second varsity eight also came in first place in its race with a time of 7:12.96, ahead of UCF (7:21.00) and UConn (7:45.11). Racing in the “Daniel Fine”, the second varsity eight consisted of Bernadette Lack, Cathy Dunnet, Ananda Chou, Caroline Stewart, Lindsey Tarabula, Jordanna Heywood, Maggie Knuth, Dorothy Clay and coxswain Meg Venezia.

The women’s pair of Stephanie Tilley and Trisha Blackwell defeated its UCF counterpart with a time of 9:01.59 to 10:08.50.

The men’s varsity eight, featuring James Reilly, Matt Webb, Alex Meillat, Scott Gardner, Bill Harding, Albert Parlade, Adam Urynowski, Robin Ray and coxwain Row Bowman, came down to the final strokes as the Hurricanes pulled out in front in its win over UCF, followed by Florida Tech. UM finished with a time of 6:26.19, ahead of UCF (6:26.62) and FIT (6:30.54).

The men’s varsity four and second varsity eight each claimed second-place finishes their races against UCF and FIT, respectively. Racing the “City of Miami Beach”, the second varsity eight finished behind UCF with a time of 6:45.86 to the Golden Knight’s 6:33.74. FIT placed third with a time of 7:07.47. The men’s varsity four, racing the “Dr. Montalvo”, recorded a 7:12.02 behind FIT’s 7:03.28. UCF placed third with a time of 7:20.91.

On the women’s novice side, UCF won both the four and the eight races. The men’s novice had FIT winning the eight and UCF winning the four.

University of Miami Crew returns to action April 7th with the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta, the state championships, in Tampa.
