Women's Crew Fairs Well At President's Cup Regatta

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami women’s crew put together a solid showing in its first race of the spring semester with one Gold Medal, one Silver and three Bronze Medals at the season-opening President’s Cup Regatta on Tampa Bay.
The Hurricanes were led by its varsity four, which defeated two North Carolina boats en route, to the Gold Medal in time of 5:35.2. The varsity four consisted of Jenny Krawec, Jacqui Julien, Bridget Gallagher, Amanda Turner and coxswain Cina Quezada. The two UNC boats finished with times of 5:37.9 and 5:39.2, respectively. The varsity four featured three freshman in the boat.
The second Miami entry in the varsity four finished fourth (5:40.7), ahead of Michigan State (5:46.0) and Tampa (5:52.3). The second varsity four featured Monika Manios, Dorien Ten Have, Yianna Reizakis, Marijka VanderPol and coxswain Jenny Lee.
A UM pair, with rowers Cathy Dunnet and Lindsey Tarabula, finished with a Silver Medal in its race, placing behind North Carolina (5:40.3) with a time of 5:46.3.
The varsity eight, consisting of Krawec, Manios, Julien, Ten Have, Turner, Gallagher, Reizakis, VanderPol and coxswain Meg Venezia, earned a Bronze Medal (5:09.2) finishing behind Michigan State (5:00.9) and Yale (5:02.6). The second MSU boat finished fourth (5:13.1), followed by UCF (5:20.2) and the second Yale entry (5:31.2).
Miami’s second varsity eight with Jordanna Heywood, Bernadette Lack, Trisha Blackwell, Stephanie Tilley, Caroline Stewart, Ananda Chou, Dorothy Clay, Maggie Knuth and coxswain Jenny Lee also scored a Bronze in its race finishing behind Yale and North Carolina. Yale won the run with a time of 5:17.9, ahead of UNC (5:22.8) and UM (5:29.7). The second Yale entry took fourth (5:34.9), followed by UCF (5:39.9) and Florida (5:58.3).
The Hurricanes’ novice eight placed third behind Yale and Michigan State and ahead of Central Florida and Jacksonville.
Hurricane crew will host two home events during the spring season, beginning next weekend, Friday, March 16 with races against North Carolina, Syracuse, U.S. Naval Academy and UCF at UM’s home course on Indian Creek in Miami Beach. UM Crew is housed at the Ron Shane Watersports Complex at 6500 Indian Creek Drive. Miami will also take UCF, Connecticut and Florida Tech on Saturday, March 24 on Indian Creek, followed by two special boat christenings of an eight “Liz Dee” and a four “Peter Maivia”.
