Two More Football Signees Ink With Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami head football coach Larry Coker announced two additions to the Hurricanes’ 2001 list of football signees as defensive back Jovonny Ward of Miami, Florida (Northwestern HS), and receiver Kellen Winslow II of San Diego, California (Scripps Ranch HS), have signed national letters of intent to play for the Hurricanes. The addition of Ward and Winslow brings to 22 the number of new signees added to the Hurricanes’ roster for this recruiting season.
Jovonny Ward

One of the top safeties in the high school ranks…Was one of the most heavily recruited players in the state of Florida…An exceptional athlete with great speed…Takes great pride in being an intimidating hitter on defense…An instinctive player who has a nose for the football, allowing him to anticipate where each play is headed…Garnered 11 interceptions over his last two high school seasons…Has been timed at 4.5 in the 40-yard dash…Rated the No. 16 prospect, regardless of position, in Florida by SuperPrep…A SuperPrep All-American…Rated the nation’s No. 22 defensive back prospect by SuperPrep…Had 60 tackles and three interceptions as a junior in 1999…Played in only three games during his senior season of 2000, recording 30 tackles, two interceptions and two knockdowns at free safety…Chose Miami over Pittsburgh, Clemson, Florida State, West Virginia and North Carolina State…Coached by William Rolle at Northwestern High.

One of the nation’s most highly regarded all-around players who played extensively at three different positions (receiver, tight end and defensive end) during his high school players…Has been timed at 4.6 in the 40-yard dash…Caught 45 passes for 800 yards and nine touchdowns in his senior season of 2000…Has 32 catches for 400 yards and six touchdowns as a junior in 1999…Had 32 tackles and 13 quarterback sacks with three fumble recoveries and one interception on defense in 1999…Rated the No. 41 prospect, regardless of position, in California by SuperPrep…Rated the No. 6 “Jumbo Athlete” in the nation by SuperPrep in the summer of 2000…Is the son of NFL Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, a former San Diego Chargers and University of Missouri star who currently is an analyst for Fox Sports…Chose Miami over Michigan State, Washington, UCLA, Texas, Michigan, Southern California and Ohio State…Coached by Kevin Hedges at Scripps Ranch High.
