Baseball Announces 2001 Television And Spanish Radio Schedules

Jan. 23, 2001

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) — – The University of Miami baseball broadcast schedule for the 2001 season is nearly completed with Fox Sports Net Florida set to televise 16 dates. Additionally, the Hurricanes Spanish Broadcasting Network will air at least 18 regular season games and all postseason games on WACC 830 AM Radio Paz.

WVUM, the student voice of the Hurricanes, will once again carry all Miami baseball games, home and away.

“I want to say that this is the most games we have had televised while I have been at Miami,” commented Head Coach Jim Morris. “We have a competitive schedule with some tough opponents which translates to some pretty good TV match-ups.”

Miami’s first appearances on Fox Sports Net will be the rival Florida Gators coming to Mark Light Stadium on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9-10. The Friday night game with UF will be broadcast live, with the Saturday telecast shown on tape delay at 11:30 p.m. the same evening. WPLG Channel 10 Sportscaster Frank Forte and WQAM personality Joe Zagacki will handle the UM broadcasts, with former UM great Wicho Hernandez (1991-94) making his debut on the network as a color analyst.

Fox Sports Net will also pick up many of the Hurricanes home games against top rivals, statewide and nationally. Miami home games against Oklahoma State, FIU, East Carolina, Cal-State Fullerton, Florida State and Virginia are set for broadcast. The Hurricanes road game at South Florida will also air on Fox Sports Net as part of USF’s television partnership with the network.

For the third straight year the Spanish Broadcasting Network, featuring Radio Paz Miami Heat studio host Jerry del Castillo, Pepe Campos and Joe Martinez, will carry at least 18 regular season games and all UM postseason games on WACC 830 AM Radio Paz.

SBN will also carry a one-hour weekly show, “Linea Caliente”, the Hurricanes’ Spanish Hotline on Thursday’s during the season. The format of show features select coaches and players from the baseball team along with del Castillo and Campos live from Sarussi’s Restaurant on 67th Ave. and SW 8th street.

“We have had a successful partnership with our Spanish Broadcast Network,” added Morris. “Two years ago they became the first Spanish radio to broadcast from the College World Series when we won the championship in 1999. When I am out in the community, I here very good things about their broadcast, including the weekly show they produce. It means a lot to this program to get the exposure in that they offer in this community.”

SBN will begin its 2001 Hurricane Baseball schedule with the season-opener against FAU. Similar to Fox Sports Net’s schedule, SBN will carry many of the Hurricanes top contests this season, including FIU, Florida, Oklahoma State, East Carolina, Cal State Fullerton and Florida State.
