Clarke Wins Triple Jump At Virginia Tech Indoor

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami junior Kareen Clarke (Lithonic, GA) placed was the top collegiate finisher in the women’s triple jump to highlight individual performances for the Hurricanes women’s track and field team Saturday at the Kroger Indoor Invitational hosted by Virginia Tech University at Blacksburg, Va.
Clarke, the returning BIG EAST indoor triple jump champion and an all-American in the event last year, leaped 41 feet, 11.5 inches (12.79 meters), to win the collegiate division of the event. That performance exceeded the NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the upcoming NCAA Indoor Championships, tentatively earning her a place in this year’s national indoor championships. Senior Antonnikka Owens (Orlando, FL) produced a best leap of 41 feet (12.54m) to take fifth place while junior Raquel Scott (Dallas, TX) was 14th with a jump of 38-1 (11.85m).
Miami’s distance medley relay unit was fifth in the women’s DMR in a time of 11 minutes, 58.63 seconds. James Madison University won the event in 11:48.83 with Georgia Tech second (11:49.24), Georgetown third (11:49.78) and Wake Forest fourth (11:51.29).
The Hurricanes continue the indoor season on February 2 at the Bank of America Invitational at Gainesville, Fla. The 2001 BIG EAST Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships are slated for Feb. 17 at Syracuse, NY.
