Miami Players Make All-Bowl Teams

Jan. 17, 2001

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Four Miami Hurricanes football players were recognized recently for outstanding performances in UM’s 37-20 victory over Florida in the Nokia Sugar Bowl as they were named to All-Bowl teams by two national publications. Consensus All-America linebacker Dan Morgan, winner of the Butkus, Bednarik and Nagurski Awards this season, joined a trio of teammates who earned kudos in the wake of Miami’s victory.

Morgan was one of 25 players featured by CBS Sporstline.com after he closed his Miami career with a performance indicative of his steady play throughout his career with 12 tackles (10 unassisted) and a pass interception in the victory over Florida. Morgan had two tackles for losses in the game and fittingly ended his collegiate career with a pass interception on his final play as a Hurricane.

Three sophomore Hurricanes – tight end Jeremy Shockey, cornerback Phillip Buchanon and placekicker Todd Sievers –were named to Sports Illustrated’s All-Bowl Team that was featured in the magazine’s January 8 issue. Shockey had four catches for 47 yards and one touchdown against Florida. Buchanon shut down UF receiver Reche Caldwell in the second half and set up Miami’s final touchdown with an interception in the fourth quarter. Sievers made three field goals, plus a 50-yard extra point, in the victory and his 44-yard field goal is a career-long at UM.

Miami, which finished the 2000 season second in both major football polls, opens the 2001 season September 1 at Penn State. The Hurricanes will return 14 starters from the 11-1 BIG EAST championship team of 2000, including eight starters on defense and six on offense. Also, both kicking specialists return for action.
