Baseball One-Hits Dartmouth In 6-1 Win
March 26, 2000
Coral Gables, FL – Hurricane freshman Kiki Bengochea (4-1) pitched a career-high 8.0 innings with just one hit in leading Miami (22-9-1) to a series clinching 6-1 win over Dartmouth (7-8) at Mark Light Stadium on the UM campus.
In the game, the Hurricane defense committed no errors for just the third time all season. For the second straight game, designated hitter Mark Walker came up big. Walker broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with a two-run home deep to left field. Walker had three RBI in Saturday night’s game as well.
Hurricane closer Luke DeBold closed out the final inning, retiring all three batters faced. Dartmouth starter Conor Brooks (3-1) picked up his first loss of the season after going 7.1 innings with nine hits, four earned runs, no walks and six strikeouts. Big Green reliever Jon Miller allowed four hits and two earned runs.
Dartmouth scored the first run in the top of the fifth, when Bengochea walked in second baseman Joe Rockers from third for the 1-0 lead. Rockers reached base earlier with a single to left field, breaking up Bengochea’s no-hitter through four innings. Bengochea then proceeded to walk the next three Dartmouth batters to bring in that lone run, before striking out shortstop Matthew Klentak.
Miami answered in the bottom of the inning with a run of its own when left fielder Mike Rodriguez singled in catcher Greg Lovelady from second. Lovelady had led off the inning with a double.
Walker extended Miami’s lead to 3-1 in the sixth with a two-run homer to left field off of Brooks, also scoring first baseman Danny Matienzo. Matienzo had led off the inning with a double down the left field line just prior to Walker’s at bat.
In the seventh, Miami made it 4-1 when third baseman Kevin Howard singled in centerfielder Charlton Jimerson from third. Jimerson led off the inning with his first triple of the season.
Miami padded its lead in the eighth with two more runs for a 6-1 lead. Lovelady got it started with a short fly ball to shallow centerfield that allowed second baseman Kris Clute to score all the way from second. Clute had reached base on an infield single up the middle then stole second. Mike Rodriguez drove in Lovelady for the second run with a bloop single to centerfield.
