Sept. 21, 2000
Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami School of Business’ Department of Management has announced that three Hurricane student-athletes will receive scholarship awards on Friday, September 22. Varsity women’s rowers Jenny Lee and Marijka VanderPol and men’s tennis player Joel Berman are the recipients.
The National Association of Purchasing Managers will present Lee, a junior from Tallahassee, with an academic scholarship worth $2,500. Lee has been the coxswain for the varsity women’s eight ever since her arrival on campus in 1998. With Lee, UM’s varsity women’s crew has emerged as the team to beat in the Southeast. The Hurricanes regularly finish among the top finishers at several regattas during her tenure. A member of UM’s honors program, Lee has been an active member of the American Legacy Foundation, created following the recent Tobacco settlement.
VanderPol, a junior from Fairhaven, MA, is in her second season with the varsity women’s crew. The Gabelli Asset Management will honor VanderPol with a scholarship of $5,000. VanderPol, who rows in the stern section of the boat, has been an active member of the varsity eight and four. One of her top accomplishments was assisting the varsity women’s eight to the 1999 Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association championship.
The Department of Management will honor Berman, a junior from Seminole, with the Dr. Harold Strauss award of $1,500. Berman has played with the men’s varsity tennis team since his freshman season in 1998-99. As a sophomore, Berman compiled a 14-4 record playing primarily at No. 5 and 6 singles.
