UM Women's Soccer Downs FAU 6-2

CORAL GABLES, Fla.–Sophomore Laura West (Allen, Texas) scored three consecutive goals in the second half to lead the University of Miami women’s soccer team to a 6-2 victory over Florida Atlantic at FAU Field Wednesday night.
UM improves to 1-1 on the season, while the Owls fall to 2-1. The Hurricanes lead the all-time series with FAU 3-0.
The Hurricanes took 24 shots compared to FAU’s seven shots. UM owned a 2-1 lead after one half of play. FAU struck first, as Lissane Peart scored a goal at 8:17. The Hurricanes were quick to answer back, Junior Alexis MacKenzie (Plantation, Fla.) scored the first goal for UM at 11:12 with freshman Vonda Matthews (Broken Arrow, Okla.) picking up the assist.
Freshman Caryn Blood (Red Bank, N.J.) scored the second goal at 33:35 on a pass from freshman Nicole Safran (Harrison City, Penn.).Blood also scored the final goal of the game on an assist by junior Mehryn Corrigan (Clearwater, Fla.)
The second-half was dominated by the Hurricanes as West scored three goals in a row, starting in the first three minutes of play. Safran, MacKenzie, and freshman Mary Luke (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) were the three Hurricanes assisting in the three goals scored by West.
FAU’s Melissa Bobby scored an unassisted goal at 89:05.
The Hurricanes continue their road-swing, traveling to Tuscaloosa, Ala. this weekend to participate in the University of Alabama Invitational. UM will face Mississippi State Friday at 5 p.m., before playing host Alabama on Sunday at 1 p.m.
