CORAL GABLES, FL–The University of Miami women’s soccer team defeated Lynn University, 7-0, Monday evening in an exhibition match at Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables.

Junior Alexis MacKenzie (Plantation, FL) scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Hurricanes. MacKenzie’s first goal came at the 4:56 mark on a pass from newcomer Vonda Matthews (Broken Arrow, OK). MacKenzie closed out the first half scoring with a goal at the 34:59 mark on a pass from freshman Nicole Safran (Harrison City, PA). Safran also recorded a goal in the first half as the Hurricanes opened a 4-0 lead.

Other Hurricanes netting goals included freshman Mary Luke (Ft. Pierce, FL), sophomores Lisa Gomez (Boca Raton, FL) and Laura West (Allen, TX), and senior Kazmeen Moolchan (Houston, TX).

“Everybody played very well, the team was very excited about playing tonight,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “Expectations are very high this year. We had a great recruiting class and we expect our team to be better than the team we had last year.”

Miami recorded 24 shots on goal while holding the Knights to only five. Similarly, with corner kicks, the Hurricanes out shot Lynn seven to one

UM goalkeepers, Rachel Elsby and Elizabeth Swinson combined for a total of five saves on the night. Lynn goalkeeper, Sarah Reed had a busy night recording 17 saves.

Miam will open up the 2000 season against 1998 National Champion Florida at Cobb Stadium on the UM campus on August 27 at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
