James Jones Named July Academic All-Star

Coral Gables, FLA – James Jones, a freshman on the men’s basketball team, earned a 3.34 grade point average in Business this past semester. A resident of nearby Hialeah and American Senior High School, Jones was a member of the National Honor Society prior to enrolling at Miami.

Regarded as one of the top players coming out of the state of Florida in 1999, Jones was a First-Team All-Dade County and All-State selection. Additionally, Jones was named Florida’s Class 6A Player of the Year, as well as The Miami Herald Boy’s Basketball Player of the Year. His aunt Lisa also played basketball at the University of Miami from 1988-90.

On the court, Jones was a standout for the Hurricanes in 1999-2000. As a freshman, Jones came off the bench in 33 games and averaged 12.8 minutes of action per contest. While averaging 3.9 points per game, Jones became one of the Hurricanes top shooters. He made the third-most three-pointers on the team in 1999-2000, while placing second in free-throw percentage (.833). His biggest performance of the season came on the road at Pittsburgh, when he totaled 16 points, three rebounds and two assists in UM’s 74-66 win over the Panthers at Fitzgerald Field House.
