Women's Crew Finish First, Place Third

April 8, 2000

TAMPA, FL – The University of Miami’s women’s varsity eight recorded the fastest time, with a 6:09.3, at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta in Tampa, FL, but ended up finishing in third place.

The decision to give the UM boat third place was made after the race, when the University of Jacksonville voiced a protest that the Miami boat had cut them off and prevented them from finishing in second place. The officials agreed with the Jacksonville boat, under much protest from UM head crew coach Joe O’Connor, and moved the Hurricane boat to third, behind both the Central Florida and Jacksonville boats. This decision awarded UCF first place and Jacksonville second. The UM boat was championed by coxswain Jenny Lee, Angelina Hargot, Marijka Vanderpol, Britta Chambers, Marleen Meijeringh, Monika Manios, Amanda Turner, Katherine Weeden and Megan McGrath.

The University of Miami men’s varsity eight brought home a second place finish, in a time of 5:31.4, to finish three seconds behind the Jacksonville boat for first place. The Hurricanes were led by coxswains Rob Bowman and Alphonso Wongvalle and rowers Rich Gustin, Mike Hayes, Alex Meillat, Steaven Niertaka, Albert Parlade, Robin Ray, James Reilly, Adam Uhrynowski and Matt Webb.

The Hurricanes finished in second in the men’s varsity four, finishing in front of UCF and Florida Tech. In the women’s varsity four UM took third to finish in front of UCF, Rollins and the University of Florida.

To round out the other races, the Hurricanes won the men’s JV eight and the men’s pair. UM finished second in the women’s novice eight, the women’s freshman novice four and the men’s JV eight, while taking third in the men’s freshman novice eight and fourth in the men’s novice four.

The Hurricane Crew’s row back into action on Saturday, April 15 when the women travel to Princeton, NJ to take Cornell, Radcliffe and Princeton and the men travel to Oak ridge, TN for the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
