Crew Heads to Florida State Championships
April 5, 2000
Coral Gables, FL – For the last two seasons the University of Miami women’s crew came away from the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta in Tampa, FL, with a clean sweep of all five races it was entered in. Going into the 2000 Championships, the same is expected for the fourth-year Miami women’s program.
“Our women are rowing with a lot of confidence,” said Head Coach Joe O’Connor. “They’ve been getting stronger each and every race. We faired real well against Central Florida and in our own regatta a few weeks back, followed by a decent performance against Boston and Syracuse. At FIRA, Central Florida and Florida Tech will be our top challenge at this year’s state championship and we’re really looking forward to the challenge.
The women’s varsity eight for the Florida Intercollegiate Championship Regatta consists of coxswain Jenny Lee, Angelina Hargot, Marijka Vanderpol, Britta Chambers, Marleen Meijeringh, Monika Manios, Amanda Turner, Katherine Weeden and Megan McGrath. UM’s second varsity eight consists of coxswain Meg Venezia, Cathy Dunnet, Lindsey Tarabula, Elizabeth Payer, Michele McVeagh, Kristi Killingsworth, Julie Bender, Levonne Tarafa and Yianna Reizakis.
“The men’s crew keeps on improving each and every race. Our varsity faired well against UCF early on and won the men’s overall trophy at the Clemson Sprints. Like the women, they are also rowing with a lot of confidence.”
The men are led by coxswains Rob Bowman and Alphonso Wongvalle and rowers Rich Gustin, Mike Hayes, Alex Meillat, Steaven Niertaka, Albert Parlade, Robin Ray, James Reilly, Adam Uhrynowski and Matt Webb.
