Coral Gables, FL – Host-school Boston University used a slight headwind on flat water to sweep both Miami and Syracuse in a match race on its home course on the famed Charles River. The Terriers rowed to first place finishes in both the women’s varsity eight and junior varsity eight with times of 6:59.6 and 7:23.3, respectively.

UM’s 19th-ranked women’s varsity eight finished in a close third behind second-place and 20th-ranked Syracuse with a time of 7:08.3 to the Orangewomen’s 7:06.0. Boston U., which placed first, is ranked 10th nationally in the women’s varsity eight.

The Hurricane women’s varsity eight consisted of coxswain Jenny Lee, Angelina Hargot, Marijka Vanderpol, Britta Chambers, Marleen Meijeringh, Monika Manios, Amanda Turner, Katherine Weeden and Megan McGrath.

The Miami women’s junior varsity eight placed second in its race with a time of 7:31.5, ahead of Syracuse’ 7:35.9 and nearly eight seconds behind first-place Boston U. (7:23.3). The UM women’s JV eight was coxswain Meg Venezia, Cathy Dunnet, Lindsey Tarabula, Elizabeth Payer, Michele McVeagh, Kristi Killingsworth, Julie Bender, Levonne Tarafa and Yianna Reizakis.

“It was a really tough race against some real tough opponents,” said Head Crew Coach Joe O’Connor. “Boston U. rowed impressively today on its home course. They are definitely one of the top 10 teams in the NCAA. We are capable of rowing much quicker and we will. We will get to meet up with Syracuse again later at the BIG EAST Regatta.”

The UM women return to action next week as the varsity boats look to defend state titles at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta in Tampa, FL on Saturday, April 8.
