Crew Blows Knights Out Of The Water

MIAMI BEACH, FL – The University of Miami women’s eights overwhelmed Central Florida in taking first in the final races of Saturday’s in-state rivalry.

The varsity women’s eight completed the course with a time of 6:48.3, close to six seconds before UCF’s “A” boat crossed the line at 6:54.2. The varsity women were led by coxswain Jenny Lee and rowers Angie Hargot, Marijka VanderPol, Monika Manios, Marleen Meijeringh, Britta Chambers, Amanda Turner, Kate Weeden and Megan McGrath.

UM’s junior varsity eight also defeated Central Florida as the Hurricanes finished the race in 7:02.2 compared to the Knights time of 7:33.6. The JV eight consisted of cox Meg Venizia and rowers Cathy Dunnet, Lindsey Tarabula, Liz Payer, Michelle McVeagh, Kristi Killingsworth, Julie Bender, Levonne Tarafa and Bernadette Lack.

In other women’s rowing action, the Hurricanes novice four took first with a time of 9:08.8.

On the men’s side, UM continued to dominate the varsity eight race as the ‘Canes used a five second cushion to defeat the Knights. UM finished in 6:22.6 while UCF “A” crossed in 6:27.6. The University of Miami men also took the varsity four race as the “A” boat won with a time of 7:13.4 and the “B” finished second (7:24.4).

The UM women head to Boston, MA on April 1 to race Boston University and Syracuse. The men’s contingent heads to Clemson, SC on April 1 to participate in the Clemson Sprints.
