Baseball Takes On Villanova, Eastern Michigan Over The Weekend

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball team (8-5),ranked No. 10 in the latest Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches’ Poll, will hostVillanova (0-1) on Friday, February 25 at 7:00 p.m. at Mark Light Stadium.Next, the Hurricanes travel to Homestead, FL, to take on the EasternMichigan Eagles (0-0) at the 2000 Homestead Challenge at 7:00 p.m. onSaturday and 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The Hurricanes are coming off a 4-0 record last week. Miamidefeated Barry, 5-3, in a mid-week game followed by a three-game sweep ofSouth Florida over the weekend.

On the mound Friday night for the Hurricanes, will be senior aceDavid Gil (2-0), who will be looking for his 16th consecutive win. In hislast outing against South Florida, Gil earned the victory pitching sixinnings with a team season-high 12 strikeouts. Gil won his last outing ofthe 1998 season, followed by a 12-0 record in 1999 and started the 2000campaign with a win over Wake Forest.

Sophomore Brian Walker (1-1) will make his second straight start asUM’s No. 2 pitcher on Saturday night against EMU. In his last start, Walkerearned the win with a career-high six innings pitched with six strikeouts indefeating South Florida, 6-0.

Sunday afternoon’s pitcher will be true freshman Kiki Benogchea(0-1). Bengochea took a no-decision in his first career start against USFlast Sunday. He left the game UM leading after 4.1 innings of work and gaveup three hits, one earned run, four walks with four strikeouts.
