Weir, Keim, Lengyel Claim Big East Titles
Feb. 18, 2000
UNIONDALE, NY – Junior Jen Weir continued her breakout season, by winning the women’s 200-yard individual medley in a BIG EAST record time of 2:01.43, to lead the Hurricanes in day one of the BIG EAST Championships. In diving, All-American and 1999 NCAA Diver of the Year Jenny Keim took home the prize in the women’s three-meter diving, while sophomore All-American Imre Lengyel claimed the men’s one-meter competition.
Weir’s record breaks the previous mark of 2:02.75, which was set in 1997 by former Hurricane and current Hurricane assistant coach Kristel Tellegen. Keim’s and Lengyel’s victories continue Miami’s dominance in the diving events, extending the current women’s streak in the three-meter to five years, while making it nine straight for the men in the one-meter.
In the men’s one-meter diving, Lengyel was followed by teammates freshman Kyle Prandi and senior All-American Tyce Routson, who finished second and third respectively. The Hurricane men are currently seventh overall with 91 points.
On the women’s side, Weir was followed by teammates freshman Elaine Schwartz and freshman Brittany White, while Keim was just ahead of freshman Katie Beth Bryant, who took third, and sophomore Emily Spychala, who took fourth. The Hurricane women are currently in second place with 148 points, trailing only Notre Dame with 273.
The championships will continue through Feb. 19.
