Jan. 29, 2000

Lake Buena Vista, FL – Clemson (1-0) used a three-run eighth inning to pull away from Miami (2-1), 4-0, at the ACC/Disney Baseball Blast at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex.

Clemson scored the first run of the game in the sixth inning off UM freshman reliever Kiki Bengochea. The Tigers’ Brian Ellis led off the inning with a double down the right field line. CU’s next batter, Brian Holstad moved Ellis over on a sac bunt and then scored following Casey Stone’s single to right field.

UM managed three hits off CU starter Scott Berney in his 7.0 innings of work. CU relievers Matt Additon and Nick Glaser held UM in check for the remaining two innings.

In the eighth inning, CU’s Ellis reached base on a hit by pitch from UM reliever Alex Prendes. Brian Holstad singled to right, moving Ellis to second. Stone bunted over Prendes’ head to load the bases.

The Hurricanes put Chris Sheffield in to pitch following a force out at home plate. CU’s Jeff Baker then hit an infield single at second base, which the Hurricanes were slow to pick up while two Tiger runs scored. CU’s Khalil Greene then singled to score another Clemson runner before UM put closer Luke DeBold in. DeBold retired the remaining two batters in the eighth.

Hurricane starter Troy Roberson was solid in his first outing of the season, going 5.0 innings and allowing just one hit.

Miami will play North Carolina at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 30 to finish play at the ACC/Disney Baseball Blast.
