Hurricanes On SportsChannel Florida

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s and women’s swim meet against the University of Massachusetts and Georgetown University, that took place on Saturday, January 8, will be televised on Friday, January 14, on SportsChannel Florida.The Hurricane women(5-4) defeated the UMASS, 135-127, and Georgetown, 171-81, while the men (2-7) defeated Georgetown, 174-86, but fell to the UMASS, 179-81.

The women were led by junior Jen Weir (Cooper City, FL), who recorded three first-place finishes, and freshman Meghan Clabby (Coral Gables, FL) and Elaine Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, NJ), who each scored two victories of their own. Weir won the 100-yard freestyle (:53.67), 200-yard freestyle (1:56.00), and the 100-yard butterfly (:59.25). Clabby scored her victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.23) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.70), while Schwartz won the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.72) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.02).

The Hurricane men were led by juniors Scott Gentles (Atlanta, GA) and Dan Asencio (Newark, NJ). Gentles won both the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.50) and 1000-yard freestyle (9:46.05) events and took home second-place in both the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.09) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.97). Asencio won the 100-yard backstroke (:53.07), took second in the 100-yard butterfly (:53.09) and finished third in the 50-yard freestyle (:22.39). The University of Miami men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action on Saturday, January, 15, at 1:00 p.m. against Rutgers University at the Whitten Student Union Pool on the Coral Gables Campus. Admission is free for all ages.
