Baseball Names Gil, Brown 2000 Team Captains

Coral Gables, FL – The defending National Champion Miami Hurricanes have selected senior pitcher David Gil and junior first baseman Kevin Brown as team captains for the 2000 baseball season.
Gil, a right-handed pitcher out of Miami Columbus, went 12-0 last season with a 3.19 era in leading the Hurricanes to the 1999 National Championship in Omaha, NE. Among Gil’s victories last year were over NCAA teams Ohio State, Clemson, Florida State (twice), Long Beach State, Florida International, Wake Forest and Rice.
Brown, who led the team with 22 home runs and 66 RBI in 1999, had the bases clearing double in the fifth inning that propelled the Hurricanes to the College World Series title.
The 2000 University of Miami baseball season will start with the “First Pitch” Banquet, to be held Thursday, January 20 at the Biscayne Bay Marriott, 1633 Bayshore Drive in downtown Miami. ESPN host and former UM alum Roy Firestone will serve as keynote speaker. Head Coach Jim Morris will join Firestone and the defending National Champion Hurricane baseball team in celebrating the opening of UM’s 55th season of collegiate action.
Miami opens up the 2000 season with Lynn University on January 26 at 7 p.m. at Mark Light Baseball Stadium on the UM campus. The Hurricanes will play their annual Alumni Game on Friday, January 21 at 7 p.m. at Mark Light.
