Bass, Gomez Named To All-BIG EAST Second Team

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami defenders Deidre Bass andLisa Gomez were named to the 1999 All-BIG EAST Second team. Additionally,Gomez was also selected to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team.

Bass, a sophomore from Coral Springs (Stoneman-Douglas HS), is thelone player on the UM roster to have started in all 39 games during theprogram’s first two seasons of varsity competition. This past season, shefinished tied for third on the team with 18 points off of seven goals andfour assists. Three of her goals were game winners, in addition torecording one game winning assist. As a freshman, Bass was selected toSoccer Buzz website All-National Second Team for first-year programs.

Gomez, a freshman from Boca Raton (Spanish River HS), started all 20games in 1999. She also finished with 18 points off of a team-best 10assists and four goals. Most recently, she had the second-best offensiveday by a UM player as she recorded three goals and two assists in UM’s 7-0shut out win over Boise State in the ’99 regular season finale.

The 1999 season was the first season of competition in the BIG EASTConference for the Hurricanes (12-8-0, 2-3 BIG EAST). In its second seasonof varsity competition, Miami won more games than its 1998 overall total(11-7-1) and qualified for the eight-team post season BIG EASTChampionships. UM finished fourth in the six-team BIG EAST NortheastDivision and played at No. 6 Notre Dame (L, 5-0) in a quarterfinal match-up.
