Oct. 24, 1999

Notre Dame, IN – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (10-7) fell on the road at No. 6 Notre Dame, 7-1, at Alumni Field.

The Hurricanes lone goal was scored in the 52nd minute by sophomore forward Alexis MacKenzie (Plantation/St. Thomas Aquinas) off an assist from senior midfielder Nina Wathne.

On the play, Wathne lobbed a pass deep into Irish territory. MacKenzie and two Notre Dame defenders raced to the ball 10 yards in front of ND All-American keeper LaKeysia Beene. MacKenzie dribbled between the two defenders, and drilled a shot to the lower left corner past a diving Beene.

Notre Dame got on the scoreboard in the 12th minute, when All-American Jenny Streiffer finished off a give and go pass from Nancy Mikacenic inside the goalie box. Streiffer would later become Notre Dame’s all-time goals scored leader with her goal in the 38th minute.

The senior-dominated Irish scored four goals in the first period and three in the second to outlast a young Miami team. Notre Dame’s roster consists of four All-Americans, several All-BIG EAST players and two players from Mexico’s recent World Cup squad.
