Hurricanes Continue Preparations For Boston College

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 23rd ranked University of Miami football team (2-3,0-0 BIG EAST) held a 90-minute workout in full pads on Thursday afternoon atthe Greentree Practice Facility. With the practice, the Hurricanescontinued preparation for their matchup with Boston College (5-1, 2-1 BIGEAST) on Saturday at noon at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, MA.

Head Coach Butch Davis was pleased with the day’s practice whichclosed out the week’s formal preparation for Boston College.

“Today’s practice was a good one,” said Davis. “Like manyThursdays, the majority of today’s practice was spent on fine-tuning thegameplan and on special teams.”

Sophomore running back Najeh Davenport and senior linebacker Michael Smithare both out for the year with right knee injuries. There were no newinjuries to report.

The Hurricanes will travel on Friday morning by charter to Providence (RI)Airport. Once in the Boston area, the ‘Canes will conduct a walk-thru atAlumni Stadium on the Boston College campus.

MIAMI-BC MEMORY LANE: On November 23, 1991, the No. 1 Hurricanes survived ascare with a 19-14 win over Boston College at a rain-soaked Alumni Stadium.The ‘Canes stuck early as Gino Torretta hit tight end Coleman Bell for atwo-yard touchdown early in the first quarter. UM then marched 76 yards foranother score, capped by a three-yard Martin Patton TD run which gave Miamia 16-7 halftime advantage. Patton was forced into duty when StephenMcGuire, UM’s leading rusher, left the game in the first quarter with aseason-ending knee injury. In the second half, the game turned into adefensive struggle as just ten combined points were scored in the secondstanza. The Eagles began a late comeback, aided by a Glenn Folewy-ClarenceCannon TD pass to cut the margin to 19-14. But the BC offense, which haddriven deep into Miami territory, was stopped by the Hurricane defense inthe closing seconds to seal the victory. The win was Miami’s 10th of theyear en route to the Hurricanes’ fourth national championship.
