Women's Soccer Falls To No. 17 Huskies, 5-1

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (8-5, 2-3 BIGEAST) fell to visiting 17th-ranked Connecticut (9-4, 5-0 BIG EAST), 5-1, ina BIG EAST Northeast Division match at Cobb Stadium.

The Hurricanes lone score on afternoon came in the 15th minute of play, whensophomore forward Alexis MacKenzie headed a shot past UConn goalkeeper MariaYatrakis to narrow the Huskies lead, 2-1. On the play, UConn’s Jen Lacconefouled Miami’s Jordan Sims to set up the UM free kick from 30 yards out.Ashley West served the free kick into the box, where Deidre Bass flicked amid-air pass to a lunging MacKenzie for the score. Both teams held defensethe remainder of the half to go into halftime by the same score.

UConn started the scoring early, when Laccone scored on an unassistedscramble within the UM goal box in the 3rd minute of play.

UConn’s Lacey Toups added the Huskies’ second goal in the 14th minute whenshe picked up teammate Jen Carlson’s initial shot and scored past a divingUM keeper Elizabeth Swinson.

Both sides started the second half strong, before UM allowed UConn’s MeganAlmanzo to score following a long pass from Mary Francis Monroe in the 64thminute. Less than five minutes later, UConn added another goal from Monroeoff an assist from Carlson.

The Huskies final goal came from Toups in the 84th minute off a cross passfrom Jennifer Amaio.

UConn outshot Miami 27-16, while the Hurricanes held the advantage in cornerkicks, 6-4, and goalie saves, 7-6.

Miami returns to action on Friday, Oct. 15 in the Miami Invitational at CobbStadium. The Hurricanes face fellow BIG EAST team West Virginia at 7 p.m.,while Harvard and Butler meet a t 5 p.m.
