Miami Crew Launches Season With Head Of The Creek Regatta

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s and women’s crewlaunch the 1999 fall racing season with the seventh annual RadissonDeauville Head of the Creek regatta on Sunday, October 17 at Indian Creeknear the UM Boathouse at the Shane Watersports Complex on Miami Beach.

Joining the Hurricanes at the Head of the Creek are Florida Tech andCentral Florida, plus an assortment of rowing clubs from around the state.

Last season, the UM men and women dominated the field by winning acombined eight of the nine races they were entered in. The UM women claimedfirst place in four of five races, including the Open Eights, Club Eights,Club Fours and Open Fours. The UM men won all four races it rowed,including the Open Eights, Club Eights, Open Fours and Club Fours.

Much of the same is expected from the Miami crews, as the varsitywomen return many veterans in seniors Michele McVeagh, Megan McGrath,Elizabeth Payer and Britta Chambers and sophomore coxswain Jenny Lee. TheUM varsity men are bolstered by the return of seniors Michael Hayes, JasGrocholski, Rich Gustin and Holt Haynsworth

The Regatta’s racing begins at 8 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m. withan awards ceremony. The Shane Watersports Complex is located off 6500Indian Creek Drive, just north of the 63rd street bridge in Miami Beach.The finish line will be at Brittany Bay Park, located on the creek side ofIndian Creek Drive just before 65th street.
