'Canes Continue Off-Week Football Workouts

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 18th ranked University of Miami football team held atwo-hour workout in full pads on Friday afternoon at the Greentree PracticeFacility. With the practice, the Hurricanes continued preparation for theirmatchup with top ranked Florida State on Saturday, October 9 in Tallahassee,FL. Miami is off this weekend.
In addition to individual position drills and controlledscrimmaging, the Hurricanes worked on the two-minute drill, blitz packagesand protection, as well as special teams. Following the practice, Head Coach Butch Davis was pleased with theoffense’s performance in the two-minute drill. Davis also emphasized theimportance of special teams.
“We had a great two-minute drill today,” said Davis. “The first-teamoffense took the ball the length of the field and scored on its firsttwo-minute drill which was a real positive. We also spent a lot of time onthe special teams and kicking. It (special teams) has to be a phase of thegame that this football team makes some plays. It (special teams) is anopportunity for us to try to find an edge on teams.”
Davis also commented on the emergence of punter Freddie Capshaw who hitseven punts for 294 yards in his first career start vs. East Carolina.”His performance was very good,” said Davis. “His hang time and his get-offslooked very good. I thought he did very well.”
Sophomore running back Najeh Davenport and senior linebacker Michael Smithare both out for the year with right knee injuries. Junior defensive tackleDamione Lewis (right knee sprain), senior defensive end Michael Boireau(right ankle sprain), junior fullback Wilbur Valdez (groin) and WillMcPartland (concussion) are all day-to-day.
The Hurricanes will take Saturday off before meeting for film and awalk-through on Sunday. The ‘Canes return to regular practice on Tuesday,October 5 at 3:30 p.m. at the Greentree Practice Facility. Practices areclosed to the public.
MIAMI-FLORIDA STATE MEMORY LANE: On October 6, 1990, Miami defeatedFlorida State, 31-22 before the second-largest crowd in Orange Bowl toavenge its 1989 loss to the Seminoles. Controlling the game from the start,Miami jumped out to a 24-0 lead. Florida State finally got on the board latein the second quarter on a 19-yard Brad Johnson touchdown pass. FloridaState pulled to within 24-16 in the third quarter before Miami drove80-yards in 13 plays, concluding with Stephen McGuire’s two-yard touchdownrun. Both McGuire and teammate Leonard Conley rushed for over 140 yardscombining for 320 rushing yards total.
