Football Continues Preparation for No. 1 FSU

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 18th ranked University of Miami football teamheld a two-hour workout in full pads on Thursday afternoon at the GreentreePractice Facility. With the practice, the Hurricanes continued preparationfor their matchup with top ranked Florida State on Saturday, October 9 inTallahassee, FL.

Following the practice, Head Coach Butch Davis commented on theproductive nature of this week of practice.

“This is a work week,” said Davis. “This is a hard-hat, blue collar weekwhere we’re coming out, learning and correcting mistakes. Both days, we’vehad two major full-speed live periods against ourselves. We’re going to hitevery phase of the game before this week is over.”

Sophomore running back Najeh Davenport and senior linebacker Michael Smithare both out for the year with right knee injuries. Junior defensive tackleDamione Lewis (right knee sprain), senior defensive end Michael Boireau(right ankle sprain), junior fullback Wilbur Valdez (groin) and WillMcPartland (concussion) are all day-to-day.

The Hurricanes will return to practice on Friday, September 29 at 3:30 p.m.at the Greentree Practice Facility. Practices are closed to the public.

MIAMI-FLORIDA STATE MEMORY LANE: On September 3, 1988, Miami openedthe year with a 31-0 shutout victory over pre-season No. 1 Florida State.The Hurricanes dominated from the start as they out-gained the Seminoles 450yards to 242 as the ‘Canes defense shut down the Seminoles. The defenseforced the #1 ranked Seminoles into six turnovers on the day, fiveinterceptions and one fumble. With the defense leading the way, 1988 becamethe sixth straight year that Miami had taken on and defeated the preseason#1.
