Women's Soccer Shuts Out Div. II No. 1 Lynn, 3-0

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (7-3) scoredthree second half goals to earn a 3-0 shutout victory and hand NCAA DivisionII No. 1 Lynn University (6-1) its first loss of the 1999 season at CobbStadium on the UM campus.

Senior midfielder Nina Wathne scored the game winning goal in the57th minute when she took a Deidre Bass pass and faked her Lynn defender andthen the goalkeeper to score in the upper right part of the net from 10yards out.

Miami got back on the scoreboard a team-record 29 seconds followingUM’s initial goal (56:44), when sophomore forward Jenny Sanchez tookWathne’s quick pass and scored from 15 yards out at 57:13. The previous UMrecord was 45 seconds against Nova Southeastern during the 1998 season. Sanchez’ goal was credited with a double-assist after Bass stole the ballfrom a Lynn forward and touch-passed it to Wathne, who quickly set upSanchez in between two Lynn defenders.

UM closed out scoring in the 74th minute when freshman forwardAllison McWhinney scored to the top right from 15 yards out off a DeirdreFoster pass. McWhinney’s goal adds to her team leading eight on the seasonand 20th overall point scored.

Miami head coach Jim Blankenship earned the victory over his formerteam, in which he coached for 12 seasons prior to taking the head positionat UM. While at Lynn, Blankenship won three national titles and was namedNational Coach of the Year five times.

The Hurricanes return to BIG EAST Conference action this weekendwhen Miami hosts Syracuse on Sunday, October 3 at 1 p.m. at Cobb Stadium.
