Hurricanes Shut Out Central Florida, 4-0

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (5-2)out-shot Central Florida, 21-9, en route to a 4-0 shut out of the GoldenKnights (5-3) in a non-conference meeting at Cobb Stadium on the UM campus.
Senior midfielder Nina Wathne scored her first goal of the season,the eventual game-winner, off an assist by freshman forward AllisonMcWhinney in the 10th minute to put Miami ahead in the match. McWhinneytook a long pass from the UM defense and dribbled deep into UCF territorywhere she found Wathne streaking across the middle for the soft pass.Wathne beat UCF goalkeeper Maria Banuls to the lower right corner of thebox.
Miami got back on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute, when McWhinneyscored on an unassisted shot following a scramble intto the right side.Sophomore forward Jennifer Sanchez had the initial shot that deflected offthe side bar, which McWhinney tried to put in. UCF’s Banuls made the save,but let the ball roll loose. Sanchez scrambled to put the ball in, butBanuls made another deflected save that led to the McWhinney score.
In the 30th minute, sophomore defender Deidre Bass took a short passfrom Wathne and dribbled half the field past the UCF defense to scoreone-on-one past Banuls.
At the half, UM led 3-0 and held a 14-6 shots on goal advantage.UCF began the second half with a new player in goal, Jessica Kuhlman.
Kuhlman was tested quick as freshman defender Lisa Gomez dribbledthe full length of the field from deep in UM territory and streaked pastnumerous UCF players to score on a one-on-one shot in the 49th minute.
After totaling six saves in the contest, Hurricane goalkeeperElizabeth Swinson was substituted by sophomore Rachel Elsby for the finalnine minutes. Swinson was making her UM debut as the starter.
Miami travels next to Providence and Boston College this weekend tostart BIG EAST Conference play.
