Women's Soccer Shuts Out Maine, 2-0

ORONO, ME — The University of Miami women’s soccer team (3-0) openedup play at the Black Bear Invitational with a 2-0 shut out ofhost-school Maine (0-2) at Alumni Field on the UM campus.

Leading the Hurricanes was Jordan Sims, who scored the eventualgame-winner in the seventh minute off an assist from Alexis MacKenzie. Sims, a sophomore transfer from Florida State, took the cross pass fromMacKenzie, a sophomore transfer from Florida, and drove the ball past alunging Karen McMullen to start the Hurricane scoring.

In the 54th minute, freshman forward Allison McWhinney continued herscoring streak with a dribble-shot past McMullen, off an assist by LisaGomez. McWhinney has now scored a goal in each of Miami’s first threecontests.

“It was a good win,” said Miami head coach Jim Blankenship. “They(Maine) came down to Miami last year and beat us. So it feels good toeven the score with them. It was definitely a good win against a verygood opponent.”

Maine, which was held to just two shots in the first half, musteredone more in the second half, while the Hurricanes totaled 27 shots ongoal. Sims and senior forward Nina Wathne led UM with five shots each.

Miami goalkeeper Rachel Elsby recorded three saves, while McMullentotaled 12.

The Hurricanes will face New Hampshire on the final day of theinvitational, Sunday at Noon.
