City Celebrates Hurricane Men's Basketball Star

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami-DadeDepartment of Parks and Recreationalong with Dade County Public Schools, Miami Northwestern High School,Boy’sand Girl’s Club, and the James E. Scott Homes Development will celebrateSaturday, May 1st as Tim James Day. Festivities, which will includeaproclamation from the Mayor’s office, will begin at 10:00 a.m. at theNFL-YET Center located at 7090 NW 22 Avenue in Miami.
James, a senior forwardon the University of Miami men’s basketballteam, averaged 18.6 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in leading theHurricanes to a 23-7 record and their second consecutive trip to theNCAATournament.
A two-time first-team All-BIGEAST selection and 1998-99 BIG EASTCo-Player of the Year, James was named third-team All-America by boththeAssociated Press and National Association of Basketball Coaches.
James, a Miami native and1995 graduate of Miami Northwestern HighSchool, has been a positive influence in the community working withthe”Join a Team, Not a Gang” program. The program, sponsored by the Miami-DadePolice Department, helps at risk children in the community find positivealternatives to gangs.
James is scheduled to graduatethis summer from the University ofMiami with a degree in Sociology.
For his efforts both onand off the court, the University of Miamiretired James’ number 40 on Feb. 27th prior to the Hurricanes’ regularseason finale against Rutgers. James joins Rick Barry (No. 24) as theonlymen’s basketball players in UM history to have their numbers retired.
Those expected to attendthe event include Mayor Alex Penelas,United States Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek, Florida State Senator KendrickMeek, and Dade County Commissioners Dorrin D. Rolle and Dr. BarbaraCarey.
