Chow Receives Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar Award

CORAL GABLES, FL – University of Miami senior Aisha Chow has beenrecognized by Black Issues in Higher Education magazine as an ArthurAshe Jr. Scholar-Athlete award winner for the 1998-99 school year.

Chow, from Marival, Trinidad,earned a 3.97 average in Microbiologyand Immunology while leading the Hurricanes to the state and southregionchampionships in 1999.

Her distinction from Black Issues marks her fourth academic honor this postseason. Chow was also named a GTE District III and NationalAcademic All-American as well as being named a top scholar-athleteby theCollegiate Rowing Coaches Association.

Black Issues has been awardingthe Sports Scholar of the Year awardsince December 1992. In 1994, the award was named after ArthurAshe Jr.The award is given to collegiate student-athletes of color who excelintheir respective sport, are active in community relations and maintaina 3.2or better GPA.

Chow, a Provost and Dean’slist honor roll student every semestershe’s been at Miami, is as much active off campus as she is on campus.Aside from daily practices with UM Women’s Crew, Chow spent timevolunteering at the Daily Bread Food Bank, in Dade County schools,withHabitat for Humanity and in the UM Medical Center.
