UM Divers Advance To Olympic Semifinals

Sydney, Australia – University of Miami juniors Stefan Ahrens and Imre Lengyel both advanced to the semifinals of the 3-meter diving competition after strong performances in the preliminaries at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

Ahrens, a three-time All-American who is competing in his first Olympic Games for Germany, recorded 385.50 points in placing 12th. Lengyel, also a three-time All-American, placed 13th in the preliminary round with a score of 382.98 points. Lengyel is making his first Olympic appearance competing for Hungary.

Xiong Ni (China) was the top qualifier with 457.38 points followed by Mexico’s Fernando Platas (444.60) and Dimitry Sautin of Russia (444.51). Mark Ruiz of the United States qualified fourth (429.30).

Former UM diver Jose “Chemi” Gil (Spain) finished 33rd (318.72) and did not advance.

The semifinal and final rounds will be held on Tuesday, September 26.
