Miami Announces 2007 Women's Soccer Schedule

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Head coach Tricia Taliaferro has announced the 2007 University of Miami women’s soccer schedule, which features matches versus seven NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago, including a match versus the defending national champions.
The 19-match schedule also includes five contests versus in-state opponents and eight home matches at Cobb Stadium. The Hurricanes will play nine non-conference matches and a full slate of 10 conference matches in the ACC – arguably the strongest soccer conference in the nation. In 2006 alone, the ACC sent seven teams to the NCAA Tournament, had two teams advance to the semifinals and crowned the national champion.
Miami opens the 2007 season with a pair of matches in Oxford, Miss., taking on Ole Miss, who finished second in the SEC’s Western Division one year ago, on Friday, August 31 and then Alabama A&M on Saturday, Sept. 1, before moving on to Birmingham, Ala., to compete in a tournament hosted by Samford University. On Thursday, Sept. 6, the `Canes open the tournament versus host Samford, who advanced to the semifinals of the 2006 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, and then wrap up tournament play versus LSU on Saturday, Sept. 8.
After playing its first four games of 2007 on the road, Miami returns to Coral Gables for five of its six remaining games in September, kicked off by its home opener at Cobb Stadium versus USF on Thursday, Sept. 13. The `Canes then play host to Binghamton on Sunday, Sept. 16, before heading north to Orlando to take on UCF- who finished the season ranked 11th in the Southeast Region according to Soccer Buzz – on Wednesday, Sept. 19. The Hurricanes then return home to play Stetson on Friday, Sept. 21, before opening their challenging ACC schedule versus NC State on Thursday, Sept. 27. The Wolfpack finished their 2006 season ranked 13th in the Southeast Region.
Miami closes out its first month of the season taking on the defending national champions, ACC champions and perennial women’s soccer powerhouse North Carolina at Cobb Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 30. The Tar Heels won 27 straight to close their 2006 championship season at 27-1-0, including a 10-0-0 mark in ACC play.
The Hurricanes continue conference competition in October, traveling to Virginia Tech on Thursday, Oct. 4, and Virginia – who advanced to the NCAA’s “Sweet 16” last season – on Sunday, Oct. 7. Miami then returns to the friendly confines of Cobb Stadium to face another 2006 “Sweet 16” team in Boston College on Thursday, Oct. 11, before battling Coach Taliaferro’s alma mater Maryland on Sunday, Oct. 14. Taliaferro, who is heading into her sixth season at the helm of Miami’s women’s soccer program, was a four-year starter for the Terrapins from 1992-95, and helped Maryland to its most successful season and first-ever NCAA Tournament as a senior in ’95.
The `Canes then take a one-bout break from league competition, traveling up the road to take on Florida International in a mid-week contest on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
Following that match, Miami heads to Tallahassee to play 2006 NCAA Tournament semifinalists and ACC runners-up Florida State on Sunday, Oct. 21, and then returns to Coral Gables to wrap up its home schedule versus Clemson on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s quarterfinals before bowing out in a loss to FSU.
The Hurricanes close the 2007 regular season on the road at Duke on Thursday, Nov. 1, and Wake Forest on Saturday, Nov. 3. Both teams advanced to the second round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
The 2007 ACC Tournament is slated for Nov. 7-11, while the NCAA Tournament will kick off on Nov. 16 and culminate in the Women’s College Cup in College Station, Texas, on Dec. 7 and 9.
Taliaferro and the Hurricanes, who compiled an 8-9-1 overall mark in 2006, return 14 letterwinners and welcome a talented recruiting class to its 2007 squad. Among those returning for Miami in 2007 is rising-senior goalkeeper Lauren McAdam, who ranked among the league’s best in saves per game (4.94), goals against average (1.29) and shutouts per game (0.33) in 2006.
