UM's Skavronskaia Wins First Round Match at NCAA's

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Universityof Miami All-American and 25th-rankedLioudmila Skavronskaia won her first round match over Mississippi’sCelesteFrey in a three-setter, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, at the 1999 NCAA Division IWomen’sTennis Championship at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex on theUniversity of Florida campus.

Skavronskaia, a sophomorefrom Moscow, Russia, will play Arkansas’Chin Bee Khoo in the second round. Khoo defeated William &Mary’s Tari AnnToro to advance.

Skavronskaia played at No.1 singles all season for the Hurricanes,where she forged a 28-5 overall record. So far this season, shehasdefeated 5th-ranked Ditta Huber of Southern California in the Sweet16 ofthe NCAA Team Championships and No. 7 Whitney Laiho of Florida.

Last year, Skavronskaiaadvanced to the third round of the NCAAChampionships on her way to earning All-America honors.
